Subway Rewards Card

Did you know that Subway has a rewards card? I wonder if it's new to my local store. I go to Subway often and yesterday was the first time I heard about it. There's no charge for the card and I didn't have to give any personal info to get the card. You earn points towards FREE food with every purchase at Subway. Earn 1 point for every $1 spent at participating stores.

Redeem the points for ...
10 points = 1 Cookie
15 points = 1 Bag of Chips
20 points = 21 oz Drink
50 points = Regular 6" Sub or Flatbread
75 points = Regular Footlong Sub or Salad
100 points = Premium Double Stacked Footlong Sub

The card can also be loaded with money to spend at Subway.  Reward points expire 36 months after they are rewarded.

Register the card at www.mysubwaycard.com to protect your balance in case it's ever lost or stolen. You'll be eligible to receive exclusive cardholder promotions that can save you money.  Hmmmmm ... I wonder what those will be??

I don't think I'll add money to the card but I'm excited to earn points towards FREE food!!  Find a participating store near you, ask for your card and start earning points.  Try the Spicy Italian with lots of veggies while you're there. It's my favorite!!

Menu Plan Monday

I'm looking for help and suggestions.  I created a problem years ago that now I want to fix.  My almost 11 year old son Zachary isn't a vegetable kid.  He will eat carrots, corn and green beans ..... anything else .... forget it!  I catered to him too much when he was little and even now still I'm sure.  If he didn't like the veggie I served ... he didn't eat it ... and I usually gave him something different just to get him to eat a veggie at all.  I cook & serve a much bigger variety of veggies now than I did years ago.  My middle son, Logan, eats a few more veggies than his older brother and my youngest, Dylan,  eats all that I give him ... even brussel sprouts and asparagus.    I guess I learned and changed a little with each kid.

I've tried everything to get Zachary to eat more veggies.  Bribes haven't worked (I'm not too proud to admit that I've tried), no thank you bites (try one bite before saying no thank you) lead to fights, hiding veggies hasn't worked.  Zachary looks through every bite to check to see what he's eating.  Our recent accomplishment is that he doesn't pick out every tomato in the soups I've been making this winter .... only the biggest chunks get left in the bowl.  He eats lots of fruits and at least he eats 3 veggies, but I want him to have more variety.  Any suggestions??

Here's what's for dinner this week....
  • Monday - Marinaded Chicken Breasts, Zucchini & Potatoes (Raw carrots for Zachary)
  • Tuesday - Sausage Green Beans & Potatoes (Didn't have this meal last week)
  • Wednesday - Corn Sausage Chowder
  • Thursday - Deep Dish Cheddar Chicken (Raw Carrots for Zachary)
  • Friday -Meatball Sandwiches, Carrots, Chips
  • Saturday - Eating out either after or during a Basketball Tournament
  • Sunday - Chicken Tettrazini (If we're home from the BB Tournament)
What are you having for dinner this week?

Time Saving Cooking

Several weeks ago I told you about my Time Saving Cooking/Freezer Cooking.  We eaten a lot of the meals I prepared that night but still have a few in the freezer.  Tonight's cooking was completely impromptu (last time was pretty spur of the moment too but I put more time into planning meals) after my Kroger and Meijer Trips

Homemade Pizza was on the Meal Plan for tonight .... and with 4 boys (2 of mine and 2 extras ... ages 9-12.  My 3rd boy was at a sleepover) to feed I knew that I needed plenty of pizza.  I wanted Buffalo Chicken Pizza and the boys wanted Sausage Pizza.  If I was going to be cooking both Chicken and Sausage anyway it made sense to cook extra of each for the freezer.  I love having meals or at least parts of meals cooked up and in the freezer.  It makes the hectic after school homework chaos so much easier!

I started with this....

And ended with this.....

Sorry for the poor picture.  It does no justice to what I accomplished in a very short time tonight!

Now in my freezer are six bags of crumbled Italian Sausage .... perfect for pizza, 3 bags of bite sized pieces of Italian Sausage .... perfect for Corn Sausage Chowder, Coq au Vin alla Italiana etc and 3 bags of diced chicken .... perfect for Chicken Tettrazini, quick chicken salad and so many other things.  While I don't have exact plans for each of these meats now .... when I'm ready to use them I'll be one step closer to having dinner ready!

Kroger & Meijer Trips Feb 5th

I fully expected to start this post by saying "Yes I know that going to the grocery store hours before a winter storm hits is completely crazy!"  I was pleasantly surprised though.  That's not to say that Kroger and Meijer weren't busy today BUT they weren't crazy busy like I expected.  Plus everything on my list was in stock.

If I expected it to be so crazy why did  I go at all?  One benefit to a good stockpile is that even when expecting 8-11 inches of snow (like we are now) there's no need to run to the grocery store.  So why did I go today??  We all know about the Kroger Mega sale right?  Well it's a 2 week sale ending this Sunday.  Week one happened to be week two of my Eat from the Pantry Challenge ...so no Mega sale shopping that week.  I spent most of last week's grocery budget for yummy food and drinks for the Celebrate Our Memories House Party I had here last weekend.  So the start of a new week (pay period) meant that I could finally put my Mega Sale planning into action today.

Here's what I bought .... mostly items to add to my stockpile.
8 Boxes of Zesta Saltine Crackers ~~~ $1.69 ea
4 Bags of Goldfish ~~~ $1.38 ea
4 Boxes of Capri Sun ~~~ $1.78 ea
1 Pkg Dixie Napkins ~~~ $1.99
1 Bottle French's Mustard ~~~ $1.69
2 Bottles of Frank's Red Hot Sauce ~~~ $1.69 ea
5 Diet Pepsi 2 liters ~~~ $1.29 ea
1 Bag Armour Meatballs ~~~ $1.99
3 Cans of Hunts Diced Tomatoes ~~~ $.99
1 Can of Rotel ~~~ $.92
1 Gallon of Milk ~~~ $2.28
1 1/2 Gallon of Chocolate Milk ~~~ $1.69  See How to Get FREE Chocolate Milk
2 Chuck Roasts (@ 4 lbs) ~~~ $14.93
1 Dz Eggs ~~~ $1.29

I spent $25.35 out of pocket and saved $63.79 ... $18.19 of that was in coupon savings and $15 was Mega Sale Savings!  That's 72% saved!!

My next stop was Meijer.  I couldn't pass up the GREAT deal on Johnsonville Sausage.  We use Italian Sausage in many dishes.  Corn Sausage Chowder, Homemade Pizza and many others.  With the sale price of 2/$5 combined with manufacturer's coupons and Meijer Mealbox coupons I paid only $.50 a package!!  Check out how I cooked a lot of it up .... and the chicken I bought too ... to make meal preparation much faster!

Here's what I bought....
8 Pkgs of Johnsonville Italian Sausage ~~~ $2.50 ea
3 Pkgs of Johnsonville Smoked Sausage ~~~ $2.50 ea
6 Crescent Rolls ~~~ $1.25
2 Pkgs of Broccoli ~~~ $1.50 ea
1 Bag Baby Carrots ~~~ $1.50
1 Bag Frozen Green Beans ~~~ $1.89
1 Bag Frozen Corn ~~~ $1.89
1 Bunch of Bananas ~~~ $1.54
1 Bag of Grapes ~~~ $3.12
2 Cans of Cream Corn ~~~ $1.00 ea (Ouch but with all the sausage it's a given that we'll be having Corn Sausage Chowder next week)
2.5lbs Boneless Chicken Breasts ~~~ $6.68

I spent $25.52 out of pocket and saved $63.78 ... $31.00 of that was in coupon savings!  That's 71% saved!!

I'm happy to have lots of meats, some veggies and fruits plus snacks on hand.  I only spent $50.87 of my $80 weekly grocery budget.

"High Five" Monthly Recap -- January

January is over!
I know, I know ... already??
I try not to wish away time but I can't help getting a little excited when I think that Spring is getting closer!

I track my grocery spending and savings.  Do you?  I use a very easy ... already designed ... spreadsheet.  Andrea at Mommy Snacks made her Grocery Savings Chart available to her readers and I have used it ever since! (Thanks Andrea!!) Sometimes the results give me a great sense of accomplishment while of course other times they're an eye opener that I need to try a little harder.
January was the former!!

I have $80 a week budgeted for groceries so that's $320 a month.

My grocery trip totals for January
I brought home groceries valued at $1,029.
I spent $283.
I saved $746 or 72.49%

Stockpile Additions of Note
I won't need to buy these things for several months at least ... I hope!
Cottage Cheese (Won't last as long as the other items)
How did you do?  What did you stock up on?  Leave comments with your stories for the month.  Have a blog .... link up your month end posts.  Let's give "High Fives!" and learn from each other!

Firefly Lane Giveaway -- Such a Good Book!

I told you about the Celebrate Our Stories House Party I had last weekend and now I am bringing you the chance to win the book my guests read before the party.
 Firefly Lane by Kristin Hannah

I read Firefly Lane while on vacation last Spring and enjoyed it very much. I couldn't put it down.  (So much so that I spent 2 hours finishing it even after a 15 hour day at one of the Disney World parks.)  It's a story of 2 girls with different background becoming friends as children and growing up together with ups and downs along the way.  That one sentence doesn't do the book justice.  Read the description from Kristin Hannah's website for a much better "picture" of the story.

My friend's are so super important to me!  I thoroughly enjoyed my "girl time" at my party last weekend.  This coming weekend I'm headed away for the night with 4 friends from high school .... actually I went to grade school with 3 of them.  (We can't possibly be old enough to have been friends for 28 years! GASP! )  Busy lives though mean that we don't get nearly enough time with friends.  I want to make a conscious effort to make more time for friends.
House Party sent me 12 hardback Firefly Lane books.  I had 11 friends here for my party.  That means that I still have one book.  Since I don't usually re-read a book, there's no reason for it to sit on my book shelf when one of you could get to enjoy it instead.

There are 4 ways to enter to win Firefly Lane.  Enter in more than one way to get more entries.
  1. Have a good friend that you want to re-connect with or just haven't made time for lately?  Have busy schedule full of work and family?  Call, email, write a letter to or make plans with a friend for some "me time." Leave a comment with a quick sentence about what you've done.
  2. Become a follower of Saving Bit and Pieces ~~~ Leave me a comment to let me know you're following.  Leave a comment if you're already a follower too (Thank You!!)
  3. Subscribe to my daily RSS Feeds or Saving Bits and Pieces Emails. Leave me a comment to let me know that you've subscribed or are already a subscriber (Thank You!!)
  4. Share this giveaway on your blog.  Be sure to leave a comment.
Make sure to leave your name (First Name & Last Initial) if you're leaving a comment with the Anonymous option so I can let you know that you won!!

So that's 4 ways to enter.  Do any or all of them but be sure to leave me a comment for each thing you do! Entries will be closed on Sunday February 7, 2010.  The winner will be announced on Monday morning February 8th. ..... just in time for my next giveaway.
