Pecan-Oatmeal Pancakes

So even with a plan, things change ... and this time am pretty happy about it!  This week's Menu Plan has Coq au Vin alla Italiana on it for today.  Yesterday I went to a different Meijer store than where I usually go.  My store's ad had chicken on sale for $1.79 lb (which I was buying not only to stock-up but also for tonight's dinner) but the store I went to wasn't running the same sale.  So of course I didn't buy it at the higher price.

With the cold temps and snow we had today, I wanted some comfort food and breakfast for dinner is a favorite of my family's. Pancakes & Sausage!  My son asked if we were having plain pancakes or a "special kind".  That inspired me to look for a new recipe.  I knew I had pecans in the pantry.  ( My husband likes anything with pecans!!)  I found this Pecan-Oatmeal Pancake recipe at Allrecipes.  All I can say it is a keeper!  Everyone liked them.  Pecans and oatmeal with real maple syrup.....YUMMY!!

So you'll see Coq au Vin alla Italiana on next week's Menu Plan.  It's one of my favorite dinners too!

How Did I Get Here?? Part 2

Photo Credit:  My Husband while in Colorado

Part One is Here....

So we went from two incomes to one and I was excited to be pregnant with our third child.....

Our eating out habits had to change. My grocery shopping habits had to change too. I started looking through the grocery ads delivered to my drive-way that previously never made it out of the bag. I struggled with whether to grocery shop by the ad for just what we needed to get through the week or buying extra of the items on sale. For a few years, I would see what main dish ideas I could come up with based on the items on sale. I shopped just for the items we needed to make those meals. But I didn't know if the price I was paying really was the best price or just the item the store decided to put in the ad. Plus I had to do big complete shopping trips every week.

Two years ago a good friend of mine (also a stay at home mom in a single income family) forwarded me an email that she had received from a friend. It had links to a couple of money saving blogs. A Blog?? What's that? I have never heard of a blog then. I was curious and started reading them daily. I learned about and joined a website called The Grocery Game. I could log in and see a complete list of items on sale at the stores of my choice along with coupon match-ups. But what was even better for me was that those lists are color coded. One color for items that were a good price if I needed the item right then and a second color for items that were at their rockbottom best price ie stock up worthy and a third color for items that would be FREE. The Grocery Game service is free for the first 4 weeks. After that the membership price is based on how many store's lists you want to see. I was a member of the Grocery Game for about 6 months. I learned a lot about pricing, matching coupons with sales and that store's tend to run sales in 12 week cycles. I decided that I had learned enough do it on my own (and with the help of lots of blogs that I read.) I do know some people who have had memberships for years and wouldn't go without it.

Starting my stockpile was the next step. It started with Health & Beauty Items. At first my family laughed as the toothpastes, toothbrushes, bottles of shampoo, bars of soap and bottles of body wash piled up in a tub in our basement. I had no idea that there were so many deals to be had at CVS and Walgreen's. CVS has an Extra Care Program that pays you in Extra Care Bucks (ECB's) on different items weekly. The ECB's are $$ off coupons on your next purchase. Walgreen's offer Register Rewards, $$ off coupons on your next purchase too. Both paired with coupons means FREE and very inexpensive items .... and sometimes means money makers too! I'll go into more detail about CVS and Walgreen's in a future post.

From there I started adding groceries to my stockpile. In March of 2008, my husband started a new job and much to our surprise he found out at the job interview that his office would be at home. Quickly he framed out an office in our unfinished basement and added a wall to create a laundry room too. Shelves were built in the laundry room to make room for the stockpile that had my kitchen cabinets filled to the brim.

How Did I Get Here?? Part 1

Photo Credit:  My Husband while in Colorado

It's a New Year and with that it's time for my hubby and I to sit down and talk about our goals for 2010.  I've been thinking about Budget/Financial Goals, Blogging Goals and Family Goals.  As I consider these I can't help but think ....   "How did I get where I am today?"   Sure I have a lot to learn.  I want to keep learning how to add to our household savings.  I want to get better at grocery savings, meal planning, blogging and especially family time.  But before I share my goals (since we haven't found taken the time to really talk about them) I wanted to share a little about where I started and how I ended up where I am today.

For the first 6 years I was married (and my first 4 years as a mom), I worked full time.  We had the paper delivered but cutting and using the coupons in it never occurred to me.  I grocery shopped without a list just buying whatever sounded good.  I had no idea what a good price was for the items I was buying.  We ate out a lot!  Sure it was just easier after working all day but also when cooking at home we were always missing one or more ingredients for the dinners that we decided to make.  Meal Planning....never gave it any thought!  (Oh the money we could have now if I knew then what I know now!)

So fast forward to 6 years ago....  Now married for 6 years and the mom of 2 boys, my very supportive husband and I made the decision for me to be a stay at home mom.  Could we really cut our income by my full time salary??  It was scary and exciting and overwhelming and just what I had always wanted to do!  We knew the money I was spending to work ... lunches out with co-workers, gas to and from my office, clothes and pantyhose ... could be cut out easily.  We knew we wanted baby #3 and that childcare was going to get more expensive.  (We didn't know he would come just 10 months later.)

Our eating out habits had to change. My grocery shopping habits had to change too.

Another Deal on Finish

I posted Here about how I'm going to stock-up on Finish Diswasher Detergent.  Christina let me in on a deal that can be even better.  Walgreen's has Finish priced at $3.49 and you get a $1 Register Reward (RR) back.  So using the $2.50 off coupon from 1/3/09's paper PLUS getting the RR is like getting it for FREE.  The downside of this is that you can only buy one box per transaction and can't roll your RR from one transaction into the next.

Thanks Christina!!

I'm going to do this if/when a stop at Walgreen's is convenient...but still plan to do most of my stocking-up at Meijer.

Don't know about Walgreen's Register Rewards?  The RR is printed with your receipt like a Catalina.  In this case it would be for $1.00 off your next purchase.  Walgreen's does require that you have at least the same number of items as coupons and the RR counts as a coupon so you can't use it plus a manufacturer's coupon when buying just one item.  Unlike most Catalina's, RR's can't be rolled from one transaction to another transaction for the same item.  In other words, if you bought one box of Finish and then used the $1 RR towards another box of Finish another RR would not print with the second transaction.

Grocery Deals & Coupons I Ordered

I posted the links to Mommy Snacks lists of Kroger and Meijer Deals.  I thought a few were extra noteworthy and wanted to post them here too.  I also wanted to show you examples of how I use My Favorite Way to Get Coupons.

The deal I'm most excited about is on Finish Dishwasher Gel Pack and Tablets.  The 20 ct boxes are priced at $3.29.  Today's paper had a coupon for $2.50 off one box.  I ordered 20 coupons on Ebay for $8.35...that includes shipping.  I stocked up just like this about a year ago and I am just now down to 3 boxes.

  $3.29 per box
+$.41 per coupon
-$2.50 per box
= $1.20 per box x 20 boxes = $24 for over a year's worth of dishwasher detergent $41.80 in savings!!

My kids really like V-8 Fusion Fruit Drink. And my 3 boys will go through it pretty fast if I let them. It's priced at $2.49 for a 46 oz bottle.  Today's paper had a coupon for $.75 off one bottle.  I ordered 20 $.55 on one bottle coupons ( I didn't find the $.75 coupons on ebay but since both amounts double to $1.00 it didn't matter) on Ebay for $2.78...that includes shipping.

$2.49 per bottle
+$.14 per coupon
-$.75 or $.55 per bottle doubled to $1.00
-$1.00/2 bottles Meijer Mealbox Coupon
= $1.13 per bottle x 20 bottles = $22.60 = $27.20 in savings!!
(Not familiar with Meijer Mealbox Coupons?)

I've been making lots of meals with canned diced tomatoes.  Hopefully my the tomatoes in my garden will do better next year and I'll have more in the freezer but since I don't have them now.... Cans of Red Gold Tomaotes are priced at $.79 each.  I ordered 15 coupons for $1.00 off 3 cans on Ebay for $1.64...that includes shipping.

$0.79 per can
+$.11 per coupon
-$1.00 per 3 cans
= $0.57 per can x 45 cans = $25.65 = $9.90 in savings!!

I bet you're thinking..."Will she really by 20 boxes of Dishwasher Detergent?"  Yes I will buy these to stock up at this price.

"Will she really buy 20 bottles of V-8 Fusion and 45 cans of tomatoes?"  Maybe or maybe not....I will stock up ... but I will look at the Use By Dates to see how long these can be in my Stockpile.  I'll also consider what I'm spending on the other things on my grocery list to see what I have to spend towards these Stockpile items.

I wanted to show you examples of how getting coupons on Ebay really can help add to your Stockpile! Go Here to see how I stockpile to save on groceries and other household items.

Menu Plan Monday

It's time to add some veggies to our menu plan.  I keep telling my kids that one evening they are going to come to the dinner table and find ONLY fresh veggies and fruit on the table.  Why do the healthy, good for you foods disappear during the holidays??

Here's what's for dinner this week....
  • Monday - Shredded BBQ Chicken Sandwiches, Carrots, Homemade Sweet Potato Fries (We didn't have this last week)
  • Tuesday - Leftover Pasta Dinner from dinner at Mom's on Sunday   Thanks Mom!
  • Wednesday - Grilled Chicken, Broccoli, Rice
  • Thursday -  Coq au Vin alla Italiana with Mashed Potatoes
  • Friday - Turkey Burgers with Grilled Portobello Mushrooms instead of buns, fresh veggie
  • Saturday -Dinner out after double header 3rd grade basketball games
  • Sunday - Pork Roast, Oven Roasted Veggies  (using this recipe but adding more than cauliflower...probably mushrooms, broccoli, zucchini...just whatever veggies I have then), Baked Potatoes

Weekly Grocery Sales

Go Here for the Kroger week of Jan 4th ad details. Kroger runs their sales from Monday's through Sunday's.

I'm excited about the Kellogg's Promotion ... Buy any 3 participating Kellogg's Products and get 2 Gallons of Milk for FREE.  I haven't seen an ad yet to know which Kellogg's items qualify, but I bet there will be some that paired with coupons will make this a GREAT deal.  I'm hoping to do it once at the beginning of the week and again at the end of the week.  We go through milk like crazy but I can only have so many gallons in my refrigerator at once.  I'll post some senarios once I see the ad and/or go to the store for the first time. (With sales like this there are usually participating items that aren't listed or pictured in the ad.)

Go Here for the Meijer week of Jan 3rd ad details. Meijer runs their sales from Sunday's through Saturday's.

Meijer has lots of Cereal deals this week too!  Coming up next....after I finish getting my coupons cut and ordered online, I'll tell you about my other favorite deals including dishwasher detergent tablets or gel packs for $.79 a box.

I will post about my shopping trips to share how I did!

Thanks Mommy Snacks!!

My Coupon Binder Categories

My Coupon Binder is a work in progress that I add to and change every so often.  The one change I made most in the beginning ... and sometimes now ... was to the my list of categories. I've heard from two of you who are going to put together your own binders ... and I hope that others may try it too.  I thought it might be helpful to share the categories I am using now.  Obviously these would be just somewhere for you to start as we all buy different things and shop in different ways.  So if you are interested click Here to go to Google Docs to see my list of categories.  I told you that I'm a little biased with my system but truly this list of categories could be a starting point even if you're going to use a different method too.

Coupon Organization....Where to Put Them??

I can't believe one month has gone by since I started this blog and I am just now getting to this post.  It has been on my To Do List for weeks before the blog was actually up and running.  I guess I can blame it on the holidays.

Anyway....Here it is...

We've covered many of the places to get coupons.  The Newspaper, Online Printables, Store Displays were first.  Next came Ebay.  Then Store Coupons.  So now it's time to talk about what to do once you have all of these pieces of paper laying around in piles.

There are many different ways to sort and organize coupons.  What works for some may not work for others.  What used to work for me doesn't work as well anymore and what I do now is always being tweaked to work better.

So let's start where I started ... end with what I do now ... and add a few other ideas in the middle.

My first idea was a recipe box with index cards as dividers.  I had each index card labeled with a category and then put them in the box in alphabetical order.  The Pro for this system was the filing time.  I would cut my coupons, stack them by category and easily stick the stack in the proper place and I was done.  For me the Cons were greater than the Pros.  I would have to pull stacks from each category to thumb through the coupons to see what I had when planning my trips and when shopping.  Pulling the expired coupons wasn't fun either since once again I had to go through each stack one by one.  Lastly, keeping the stacks organized so that identical or at least similar coupons were together wasn't easy either.

A method that works for some but that I haven't tried is filing the whole inserts by date.  I'm quite sure the Pro of this way is not having to cut, sort and file coupons.  I've not tried this though because the Con seems to me that it would be hard to know where to find the coupons for the things you need.  I know that there are sources to search for available coupons by product name.  I am not very brand loyal though so often I'm searching for coupons for a product type not just a name brand.

I've seen some people at the grocery store with an envelope full of coupons.  Once again the Pro has to be the filing time. Cutting them and sticking them in an envelope wouldn't take much time.  I think the Con would be finding what you want when you need it.

Here's what I do now....I am a little biased!  This works great for me but like I said at the beginning of this post what works for some may not work for others.  I have a 3 ring binder with baseball trading card pages inside.  I have 4 sections ... Food Items, Household Items, Health and Beauty Items and also a section for restaurant coupons.  I cut coupons, stack them by category and put them one by one into the baseball card pages.

The Pro for this way is I can easily see what coupons I have.  I use the binder when planning my grocery trips and while shopping.  I put it up front my grocery cart and can easily find the coupons I want to use.  At first I tried pulling all the coupons I planned to use in a shopping trip before heading to the store.  Inevitably there would be coupons pulled that I didn't end up using though if there was an item out of stock or if I found a different brand of the same item that cost less.  Now wait to pull the coupons as I put the corresponding item in my cart.  Cleaning out expired coupons is easy too.  I make sure the expiration date is visible and once a month I flip through the pages pulling all that are expired.  The Con for this way is the time it takes to put the coupons in the binder. Just like with my recipe box system, I cut coupons and sort them by category.  It is time consuming then to put the coupons into the binder pages.  Some need to be folded to fit.  I do all my coupon cutting, sorting, filing and clean out expireds while sitting in front of the TV.  It really doesn't take much time once I get started.

I've had a few different binders.  I really like the one I am using now.  It closes all the way around with a zipper ... and I wouldn't suggest anything else if you decide to try this system.  My binder has several pockets inside.  I keep my grocery store ads in one and scissors and a pen in another. I use spiral notebook when making my grocery lists and keep it in my binder.

How do you sort, file, store and use coupons??  Do you use one of the ways I've mentioned here?  Let me know how your way works for you.  I'll add other ideas to this post ... just leave me a comment.  The most important thing is to find what works for you!  You'll be amazed at the savings you will see if using coupons isn't something you are already doing.
