New to Us Means Savings!

Something old to one person can be something new to another.
That principle saved us $130 last week!  As much as I tried to resist it there is now a basketball goal in our driveway.  I know with 3 boys why would I resist it? Our driveway has a slight slope straight into the street and one of our cars is always parked in the driveway.  So our driveway isn't great for basketball... or so I thought.  I'm glad that I was wrong!  Moving the car to be parked on the street at the very end of the driveway has proven to be effective for keeping the ball from rolling down the street too often.
"It's put together and ready to be stood up."

2 of my boys have spent hours out there over the last week.  Our original plan was to buy a brand new basketball hoop.  The one we had picked out was $177 ... ouch!  My hubby had noticed sometime ago that a house around the corner from us had a basketball goal laying in 2 pieces in the driveway for quite sometime (years maybe.)  He took the initiative to knock on the door and ask if they were interested in selling it.  The answer was a resounding YES!  He paid $10 for it ... yes only $10!  He replaced a bent rim and torn net for another $37.  So we were going to pay $177 for a new one but instead spent only $47!!
Whether it's at garage sale, resale store, Craig's List, Ebay or simply knocking on someone's door you never know what treasure you may find and how much money you can save!!  Of course you can reverse the principle also to declutter your house and put a little extra cash in your pocket too!

Meijer Trip April 6th

Not all trips can be the best of the best.....right? I keep repeating that to myself as I think about my trip to Meijer today.  My goal is to save at least 50% every time I shop.  That didn't happen today.  A big part of that was the Salmon I put on my menu plan for Thursday.  I almost always see Salmon reduced to $5.99/lb at Meijer.  Not today though.  We haven't had it for a long time and it sounds so good to me that I can't wait for Thursday.  So I splurged and paid .... $8.99/lb.  GULP!  I did buy just enough for hubby and me.  I'll marinate chicken breasts for the boys instead.  They don't appreciate Salmon enough for me to pay that much for it for them.

I took advantage of the P&G Rebate offer at Meijer so I'll be getting a $10 Pre-paid Mastercard back.  I had coupons that matched up nicely to make this an even sweeter deal.

Here's what I bought ....

P&G Products
Bounty Extra Soft Roll Package ~~~ $7.78
Used $1.50 on one Bounty Extra Soft from a Kroger Mailer (the individualized kind with the red border)
Bounce Dryer Sheets ~~~ $7.79
Used a $1.00 on one Bounce from Kroger Mailer
Tampax 36 ct ~~~ $4.95
Tampax 18 ct ~~~ $4.19
Used Buy one 36 ct Get one 18 ct Free from 4/4 P&G Insert
Zest Body Wash ~~~ $3.50
Used $.35 off one from the 3/7 P&G Insert
$20.82 and will get a $10 rebate.

Everything else....
1.3lb Salmon ~~~ $11.78
4 lbs Boneless Chicken Breasts ~~~ $2.29/lb - $9.09 total
Dannon Yogurt 4 pk ~~~ $1.89
Used $.60 on one from 3/14 Smart Source Insert - double to $1.00
Fiber One 4 pk Yogurt ~~~ $2.49
Used Free Fiber One Yogurt 4 pk -- Came in the mail last week but I don't remember requesting it so I don't know where it came from.
10 Meijer Brand Yogurt Cups ~~~ $.30 ea - $3.00 total
2 Bags of Meijer Brand Pretzels ~~~ $1.29 ea
Meijer Brand Brown Sugar ~~~ $1.61
2 pkgs of Dole Fruit Cups ~~~ $1.99 ea
Philly Cream Cheese Singles 4 pk ~~~ $1.50
Used Free Philly Cream Cheese Singles Coupon
Sargento String Cheese ~~~ $3.59
Used $.40 on one Sargento Cheese Snacks
1 Gallon of Milk ~~~ $2.00
Used Free Milk Catalina from last week's cereal deal
1 box of Pokemon Mac & Cheese ~~~ $.76
Dylan was very good during our shopping trips to Jungle Jim's and Meijer.  He noticed this Mac & Cheese on a clearance cart at Meijer.  With the cutest smile he said "Look Mom it's reduced!"  That was all it took and it was in the cart.

I spent $59.34 total and saved $21.25 ... $15.94 of that was coupons.  That's a savings of 26%.  I'll get $10 back for the P&G rebate.  So in the end the savings will be 38%.

How many times do you find something online that you think "I'll come back here and read more later?"  How many random unorganized things are there on your bookmarks list?  I'm guilty of seeing a recipe that sounds oh so good.  Of course I'll remember where I saw it and make it really soon right?  Wrong!  Days later I think "What was that called?" and "Where did I see it?"  No more of that for me!

Jungle Jim's Trip April 6th

With almost no fresh fruit and vegetables in my house, a stock up trip to Jungle Jim's was a must do part of my day today.  I started in the reduced produce area.  Does your local store have an area like that?  Reduced produce, meats and bread products have reduced prices only because they are nearing their sell by dates but they are still good. Some things on my list were reduced and others that were not.  My goal today was to stock my fridge with fruits and veggies ... and that's what I did.

I'm not posting prices for each item since there aren't any coupon match-ups to go along with them.  I spent a big chunk of my grocery budget at Jungle Jim's.  If you know Jungle Jim's produce area you know that what I bought was worth every penny.  If you are not local, a visit to Jungle Jim's is a must if you are ever in the Cincinnati area.

Here's what I bought ...  Reduced items have a * next to them.

4 Avocados, 4 Navel Oranges *, 8 Limes *, 1 lb bag of Raw Almonds, 1 Bunch of Green Onions, 2 Cucumbers, 1 Broccoli, 2 pkgs Strawberries *, 3 Red Peppers *, Mushrooms *, 8 Apples, 2 Bunches of Bananas, 4 Portobella Mushrooms, 2 Kiwi, 2 bags of Grapes,  1 lb of Sugar Snap Peas, 1 Bunch of Cilantro, 1 lb Chicken & Grape Salad *, 1/2 Egg Salad *, ( I have to share that the Chicken & Egg salads were priced at $.94 & $.54 respectively Yay!),  Box of Brown Rice, Bottle of each of the following spices/herbs ... Basil, Whole Black Pepper, Beef Boullion Cubes, Chicken Boullion Cubes & Dill ... all for just $.99 each.

I spent $49.26.  Although it sounds like a lot .... I'm pretty happy with it.  How much I saved is hard to track since I don't know how much the reduced items would have been at full price.  Plus I may not have bought some things had they not been reduced.

Swagbucks Question & Answer

I just received an email from a reader with a question that others may have so I wanted to share it here.  I know that lots of you have signed up with Swagbucks ... if not go here to learn more and get started! ... and are watching your account grow.  Yay!!  Now what?  Have you redeemed your Swagbucks for things in the Swag Store yet?  I've shared many times that my favorite item is a $5.00 Amazon Gift Card for 450 Swagbucks.

So here is the question I recevied.....

About how long does an Amazon gift card take to get to you when you purchase it with your swagbucks?

The answer is the same for most gift cards in the Swag Store....not just Amazon. In most cases Gift Cards are electronic gift cards.  That means that instead of receiving a gift card by mail you will receive a gift card code to use online.  Once you request a prize from the Swag Store, you will receive an email from Swagbucks asking you to verify your request.  The code for you e-gift card will show up in the "My Gift Cards" section of your Swagbucks account about 7-10 business days after your prize verification.  Another email will be sent once your prize has posted to your account.

Physical prizes from the Swag Store ... anything other than Gift Cards ....  take about 14 business days from verification to ship out.  Once shipped though it can take another 2 weeks before you receive your prize.

Just an FYI...you can only redeem your Swagbucks for 2 prizes per day and only 5 identical prizes per month. If you want to accumulate Amazon Gift Cards, Paypal cash or lots of any one thing, don't wait until your ready to use your gifts to redeem your Swagbucks. I redeem mine when I have enough to do so.

What prizes have you won with your Swag Bucks??  I'd love to know your favorites!

Menu Plan Monday

I guess this week's Menu Plan Monday should be titled the Late Edition.  It's just one day late but my routine is all thrown off.  Usually by now on Monday's I have dinner thawed or cooking or at the very least planned.  As I sit here looking at the list of the many things in my freezer I'm not inspired.  So let's see what I can come up with....Oh I'm shooting for more healthy dinners week.  My visit with the scale at the gym this morning wasn't very much fun.  A week of "staycation" meant lots quick meals, eating out and many treats (ice cream 3x, brownies 2x and a wonderful Easter Brunch that was all but fat free!)

20 Minutes Later ......

Okay that wasn't so painful.  I can check the Menu Plan off my To Do List.

If you like Salmon ... try the Citrus Soy Marinade that we're having on Thursday.  It is wonderful!  There are a lot of ingredients but it's soooo good.  It works well on chicken too.

Here's what's for dinner this week....
  • Monday - Pasta with Pesto & Tomatoes
  • Tuesday - Shrimp Stir Fry
  • Wednesday - Turkey Burgers with Portobella Mushrooms instead of Hamburger Buns, Homemade French Fries & Carrots
  • Thursday - Citrus Soy Grilled Salmon, Rice, Grilled Zuchinni & Pineapple Slices
  • Friday -Grilled Smoked Sausages with Peppers, Onions & Mushrooms, Pretzels and veggies
  • Saturday - Dinner out.  We have a new dishwasher and microwave being delivered on Saturday (I'm sooo excited!) So my kitchen will be a mess while hubby installs them.
  • Sunday - Spaghetti & Meatballs
What are you having for dinner this week?

See The Organizing Junkie for many Menu Plans if you're looking for some inspiration or new meal ideas.

Happy Easter Everyone!

I hope you enjoyed a wonderful Easter!  This post is several hours later than I planned it.  We had an incredible day that lasted hours longer than we could have imagined it would last.  Friends and my mom came over at 11:00 am for brunch and an Easter Egg Hunt.  The weather was picture perfect.  I don't remember an Easter with such beautiful weather.  After the Easter Egg Hunt we found ourselves relaxed on our deck.  The sunshine bright and kids ... and adults ... having a great time playing outside.  More friends came over. An impromptu dinner was put together and after a calm, relaxing and enjoyable day everyone just left about an hour ago ... 8:30 pm.  I couldn't have asked for a better day!

With that said ... I am still relaxed and calm and not ready to think so.... planning my Menu Plan hasn't even occurred to me yet.  Two of my three kids go back to school and my hubby goes back to work tomorrow.  That will mean more of a normal schedule than we've had here for weeks.  Look for Menu Plan Monday on Monday this week along with several things I want to catch up on.
